I’m a 21 year old senior at Boston College majoring in economics.
Despite growing up in a family with no other Yankees fans, I’ve loved the team longer than I can remember. The first season that I remember watching the team on a day by day basis was when I was 7 in 1993, the first year of the turnaround. Even though the Yanks were beaten out for the A.L. East title in a tight pennant race with Toronto, the year provided a bunch of great memories like Jim Abbott’s no-hitter and helped set the stage for a dynasty.
I’ve been lucky growing up when I did to have so many great memories of the team. There were the magical 1996 and 1998 teams. The machine-like 1999 team followed them. Then came the gutty 2000 squad that three-peated, turning it on when it had to after lackluster play for much of the season. Beating the Mets in the first Subway Series since 1956 made it that much sweeter. The 2001 team lifted a city in need of healing with a magical postseason run that fell just short. The 2003 Game 7 ALCS stands as the most exciting game I’ve ever seen. The 2005 team lost in the ALDS, but battled through a rough start to win the A.L. East. There have been rough points like brutal postseason losses in 1995, 2001, and the ultimate heartbreaker in 2004 as the Red Sox blew back from a 3-0 defecit, ended their curse, and celebrated in Yankee Stadium. That’s just the price that has to be paid, though. Most fans would love to go through all the highs I’ve had because of this team.
I’ll never forget guys like Jimmy Key, Mike Stanley, Tino Martinez, Joe Girardi, Scott Brosius, Andy Pettitte, or Paul O’Neill. The current guys like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Mike Mussina, Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, and my personal favorite, the great and classy Bernie Williams make this team fun to root for.
I hope to build on the success of this blog in its previous form and eventually turn this into the top Yankees site on the web for a combination of news and commentary that cannot be topped. Thank you for checking this out and go Yankees!
